Is Your Metabolism Really This Slow?
In the last post I left you with a fairly blanket statement about “metabolism”.
To give you the simplest way of explaining what your metabolism is, is every function of your body requires energy, this energy consumption is your metabolism. So the more your body has to do to survive in its current state the higher the metabolism.
Here is something I hear a lot…
“My metabolism is slow, that is why I can’t lose weight!”
And you’re probably right! But it is something you have more control over than you think. The common myth is that genetics plays a large role in your metabolic rate. Whilst genetics does impact your metabolism, it really only account s for about 5% of your overall metabolic rate.
Other things that impact your metabolism more are:
- What and how you eat.
- Your activity levels
- How much effort your body has to do to maintain its current state.
Now here is a secret “cheat” I discovered a few years ago relating to fat loss. If you make your body work harder to maintain its current state, your body will burn more fat continuously throughout the day even when you are not moving!
Sounds too good to be true right?
And yet it is the secret utilized and optimised by every successful fat loss coach in the world.
By simply increasing the density and percentage of your lean mass(muscle) in your body, your body has to work considerably harder to maintain it. The increases in size are quite small, you don’t need to have a physique that scares small children, just modest increases in muscle tone can produce substantial fat loss.
So getting in the gym and lifting some weights is going to make your body achieve this secret “cheat” state.
Go on, cheat your way to a fat free body!

That last statement made me go and buy some dumbbells last night. I will incorporate some weight training now with my cardio…
So far I lost 3kg….
