You Can’t Do This With A Bad Diet
Do you want to cheat at fat loss? Hopefully the posts over the last few weeks have persuaded you that you really can “cheat” you fat loss efforts in the way that you eat and in the way that you exercise… and not a counted calorie in sight!
Sadly there is one aspect you can’t cheat, and that is WHAT you eat. Unfortunately I have not found a way to lose body fat and have your cookies and cream ice cream! You can’t out-train a bad diet!
Good nutritional principles are actually very simple, the problem is for many people they are simply confused, poorly advised or just ignorant to these principles. In my opinion good sound nutrition boils down to this:
- Fresh fruit and vegetables
- Fresh meat, poultry and fish
- Selected diary produce including butter, live yoghurt, eggs and some cheese
- Water
Obvious really isn’t it!
Then there are the things you should avoid:
- Heavily processed, or refined, carbohydrates which includes breads and pasta
- Anything containing artificial additives, colours, preserving agents… basically if you can’t pronounce the name of the ingredient then don’t eat it.
- Alcohol
- Coffee
My challenge to you is to keep a food diary for the next week, writing everything down you consume. At the end of the week note down the number of times you are fully compliant with the ideal nutrition, and how many times you broke in to the stuff to avoid. If the number of times you break the rules exceeds 10% of your meals then you are not really following a good nutritional program.
I’ve attached a simple form for you to complete you can use as a food diary. Start this little experiment today with your normal nutritional habits.
Nutrition normally conjures up the most number of questions, my advice is not to over think the good principles. Notice I have not talked about calories or portion size, or even gone in to details about seemingly “good” and “bad” fruit for example. (I challenge anyone to end up eating too much broccoli!)
Forget the details for now, if you get the overriding principles right first then you will be 90% there and achieve fantastic results with that.

I am with on that! Counting calories leads to nothing more but thinking about food, as it leaves you hungry. Thinking about food leads to craving what you can’t have, and eventually you develop ravenous appetite and plunder the food cabinet.
Since ever I started with my change in eating habits, I follow what you suggested above (minus the bread part, as I still love a sandwich for lunch at work), and combine this with a daily exercise routine - and it works.
I never really feel hungry, as I eat the right stuff, and plenty of it. I stopped drinking coffee at work, stopped drinking soda pops labeled “diet”, and am down to sparkling table water instead.
Again, it *works*!
I am a wee bit confused, however, about the “live yogurt”. Normally, all yogurts that I know of have active cultures, but still come with sugar and are awfully sweet. Can you make an example of what yogurt you are referring to here, Tim?
Cheers,
Rainer

Another quick question, Tim - what about butter vs margarine?
Cheers,

Butter every time… Margarine is essentially plastic in a semi liquid form… seriously the chemical make up of margarine is so close to butter it is really scary… stick the stuff in a microwave and you might as well chew the container it comes in!

Well, tomorrow is the big day I start NR.
i have done my homework with the NR guide, the Goal workbook and have purchased you too cool cookbook. I don’t wish to leave any aspect to chance.
My office lunch tomorrow was cooked in my kitchen.
What I would have spent on a non NR lunch of dubious quality will be consigned to my piggy bank.
Thanks for all of the motivational emails. They DO make a difference and I appreciate it.
So wish me determined determination.
Have a nice evening.
All the Best,
Yvonne
